Has Heigl Crossed the Line?

Katherine Heigl of “Grey’s Anatomy” makes some scandalous comments about her recent box office hit “Knocked Up” in her new Vanity Fair article.

“It paints the women as shrews, as humorless and uptight, and it paints the men as lovable, goofy, fun-loving guys. It exaggerated the characters, and I had a hard time with it, on some days. I’m playing such a bitch; why is she being such a killjoy? Why is this how you’re portraying women? Ninety-eight percent of the time it was an amazing experience, but it was hard for me to love the movie.”

Talk about biting the hand that feeds you! While I agree with some of the points that Heigl makes about the depiction of women in the film, “Knocked Up” was the first film break that Heigl was thrown since “My Father the Hero” with Gerard Depardieu. She read the script. She signed onto the project. Quit whining! I will say that Katherine is a very good model, though (I think she has modeling experience). How much does she look like Charlize Theron in this one?!?

It’s a fine line actors walk between being opinionated and endearing (or refeshing) and opinionated and annoying…

But concerning the same actor - have you read what she said about her character on Greys?
“Heigl became concerned about her character’s seemingly uncharacteristic actions. “That was kind of a big change for Izzie, wasn’t it, after she was so up on her moral high ground. They really hurt somebody, and they didn’t seem to be taking a lot of responsibility for it. I have a really hard time with that kind of thing. I’m maybe a little too black-and-white about it. I don’t really know Izzie very well right now. She’s changed a lot. I’m trying to figure her out and keep her real.”

To me that’s the stranger comment to make…

I think it’s kind of cool that she said this…I agree with her. I LOVE Knocked Up but only in vacuum. At it’s core I think it’s a sweet movie but it is definitely one-sided and in presenting the male point of view it pretty much ignored Heigl’s character’s motiviations. I don’t think Judd Apatow is evil for not showing more of her side, but I do think it should be recognized. I love Judd Apatow but most of his movies are that way. Which is interesting b/c he TV shows were so much more balanced in terms of point of view (Freaks & Geeks was basically from a female perspective, and Undeclared was very much an ensemble). /judd apatow geek and feminist who has thought about this alot
